Picture Quality

Post by 22lrfan on Wed Sep 08, 2010 5:09 pm

I don't have a problem with posting pictures but with the quality of my photos. I've got two decent digital cameras. Does anyone have any hints/tips for getting good quality gun photos? Thanks in advance.

Are you taking close up pictures? If so look for the "macro" button on your camera. It is usually designated by a flower looking icon.

Are you asking about resolution, lighting, background, or what?

Maybe just everything in general?

Some seem to always get their feet in photos (with the gun lying on the floor.)

Make SURE you are under a BRIGHT light. Better than using the flash.

I think I've figured out the problem. I think it's the background. I had plenty of light in the ones I took last night and I'm using a 12 mp camera. I had the camera set on auto. The problem is that I was using a white background and that, along with all the light, caused a fast shutter speed and a small aperature opening. The guns were just a dark blob. The closeups were better since I didn't get so much of the white background. I'm going to try again with a dark background. Thanks for the input.

I might be getting a hair too technical, but if possible adjust which light the camera is metering. For example, you can set it to adjust for the center of the image .(the object you are taking a picture of) This might not be possible on all cameras.

Success at last. My camera doesn't have the ability to chose which light source to meter but going to a darker background made an enormous difference. I'm going to play with differend backgrounds to see how dark I need to go to get the best pictures. I've also got to work on the lighting to get rid of the glare. Here is a sample.[img][/img]

Looking good. Lighting is everything. With experimentation you'll find out what works for you.

Is that a Webley in .455?

it was made P. Webly & Sons and it's .442. I took a few pictures to post and see if someone can help me verify the model and manufacture date.

I take mine outdoors in the shade on a bright day. Seems to work well and is very easy.

Some of the .455 British were rebored for .45 acp with moon clips. Good shooter but ruins the value.

The gun book shows only the RIC or Royal Irish Constabulary using the unfluted cylinder. It was made around 1883. Also the British Bulldog and Pug models were in .442. It did not show either of those. If it has WRA on the backstrap then Winchester did some distribution of those. Those bring a higher value. Hope this helps, or I could be wrong all the way around.

I'm going to post the picture and info I have on it in the C&R forum this morning. The Blue Book says there was a "Webley No. 1 1/2 Model" with a 4 1/4" octagon barrel. That's what this one has. I'm hoping someone has a picture of one.
