gunsmith license requirements

Post by Caleb C on Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:54 am

As some of you know, JJacobs and I have started doing a little Duracoating. It's been mostly personal guns and guns for friends but we'd like to expand and start offering some basic services to the public. This is a firearm refinishing services and is considered gunsmithing by the ATF. Do we actually need a FFL? We're not transferring guns except back to their original owners. I know that we'll be required to log any guns that are kept overnight in a bound book but we're not doing any transactions. The ATF website states that gunsmiths are required to be FFLs but is this misleading?

Any advise or firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

errr as long as you just do coatings that shouldnt be considered a gunsmith?? if you give a wood stock to a carpenter to be re finished is he now a gunsmith?
most intersting.. I can tell you, unless you have a store front the feds dont like to issue you a FFL

The ATF website wasn't too clear on the matter. It seems that they want everybody who touches a gun to be an FFL. Dang ATF. Every time I have a cool idea they're peeing in my cheerios.

I think, having the FFL has to do with people being able to ship guns across state lines to your business for refinishing, they can if your a FFL, they can't if your not. IIRC
