Save the Garands and Carbines - Congress!!

Post by captain-03 on Fri Oct 01, 2010 8:56 am

Remember the BS not long ago where Korea wanted to export some Garands and Carbines but the State Dept said "NO"? Well there is currently a bill in Congress that would take the State Department and the Defense Department out of the loop for the importation of “collector” type firearms!!

So an importer could get them and sell them? How expensive do you think they would be?

Yes - an importer could import it ..

Price: I would expect them to be cheaper than CMP offers ... Also, if they are imported, they will have an import mark stamped on them (lessens value in my opinion) .. the best bet has always been CMP and I have no reason to believe that will change anytime soon. If nothing else, CMP Customer Service is the best around ... don't like it, send it back!!

I have a hard time believing they would be cheaper than CMP. Anything is better than destroying them though. How does our government come out on this? These rifles were donated to Korea, right?

The Korean Gov owns them -- they no longer are under US Army control ... They are not MAP (Military Assistance Program) or lend/lease guns ... they bought them; probably pennies on the dollar.

The State Department does not want them imported because they may end up the hands of terrorist!! Figure that one out -- CMP sells the same stuff operating under a Gov Charter -- what is the difference? Typical Gov BS!! bull

I don't reall yunderstand the terrorist thing. I remember reading an article about this a few weeks ago and they are afraid of the high capacity magazines of the Garand and carbine. It would help if the folks making decisions were educated on the decisions they are making.

If I was a terrorist the Garand would obviously be my top choice.

My take was the anti-gun folks were whooping it to not allow korea to import military guns... as of course must be the very thing evil-doers would want to use. They proved thier ignorance when they said they just didnt want high mag capacity garands brought in.

I dont really want a garand, but I wouldn't mind a nice carbine... but not at $600. My undertanding is that CMP is out of regular carbines.

Pricing would be what the market will bear. If allowed back home they will all be sold. A friend on another forum ran head first into this stupidity. He found a 1903 Springfield in the Phillipines that cannot be imported because of a ban on US arms coming home. I think the law originated with the North Vietnamese selling the spoils of war, primarily M14's and M16's, on the open world market in the 70's and 80's.
