What type or brand of rifle is a primitive weapon now

Post by double hunter on Mon Oct 11, 2010 6:14 pm

Is there a list of rifles that are considered to be primitive weapons, I am wanting to shoot a Ruger #1 this year, is this considered a primitive weapon

H&R handi rifle is all I know of. When they first allowed them the gun had to be designed before 1890, but don't know if that is still correct.

Just went to the Dept of Wildlife web site and answered my own question, looks like any breech loading single shot with an exposed hammer is legal, rules out the Ruger #1, Does anyone know if they make the Handi-rifle in .35 Whelen

They made a limited test run of around 200 rifles for Mississippi to test the market in 2009, H&R doesn't list it on their website but Van's had some last year.

Outdoors Advantage here in Amory had one, I believe. Also, Carr's in Saltillo had some.

The early H&R 35's had headspace issues and they quit making them a while till they got it straightened out

In 2008, the rules were fine-tuned again. The caliber requirement was reduced to .35, opening the door to the .35 Whelen. The rifle’s need to be of a design prior to 1900 was dropped. Also rifles with interchangeable barrels were included.

From the MDWFP Site:
Primitive Weapons: Weapons legal for use during the Primitive Weapons season are crossbows, by Special or General Permit, and primitive firearms. “Primitive Firearms,” for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; OR single shot, breech loading, metallic cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions, or reintroductions of those type rifles with an exposed hammer; OR single or double-barreled muzzle-loading shotguns, with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with percussion caps, #209 shotgun primers, or flintlock ignition.
“Blackpowder substitute” is defined as a substance designed, manufactured and specifically intended to be used as a propellant in muzzleloading or other black powder firearms, excluding modern smokeless powder. Metallic cartridges may be loaded with either black powder or modern smokeless powder (cartridges purchased at sporting goods stores).
Handguns or sidearms are not allowed for hunting deer during Primitive Weapons seasons. Telescopic sights are allowed while hunting with any primitive firearm during the primitive weapon seasons. A “telescopic sight” is defined as an optical sighting device with any magnification.

H & R does make Handi-rifle in .35 Whelen, went up to Bass Pro last night and got the last one they had, they may get some more, this is one fine round, been hunting with a T/C Prohunter the last couple years but this gun just does not fit me, I've had a scope hit me twice in nearly fifty years of deer hunting and yea you guessed it both times with the T/C, probably should have got a stitch or two with last one but made me too mad too go, had two short blood trails that morning, one the deer made and the other one I made

I've heard alot of complaints about Encores but fit/feel has not been one of them. Just proves there's is no such thing as one size fits all.

My CVA in .45-70 shoots cloverleafs all day at 100 yards with my handloads. Only thing scary about that is if you're on the receiving end.

What is your recipe?

Starline once-fired brass
CCI 200 large rifle primers
Remington 300-gr JHP
51 grains Reloder 7
COAL = 2.585"
Light Lee factory crimp

5-shot group stats:
Avg velocity 2067
Extreme spread = 23
Standard Dev. = 9

Disclaimer: This is a very hot load, and you absolutely MUST reduce this load by at least 10% before working up to it. Even then, it may not be safe if you're not using a modern rifle.

HTH.

For the record, the cannelure is completely exposed on this load. To get accuracy from this particular bullet I had to seat it very near the lands. It looks weird, but it works great!

believe it or not its really not that bad, about like a 3" turkey load.

when i first got it i shot it into a big pine log laid long ways. it hit dead center middle of the log, the bark kinda peeled back, we split the log and the bullet had 18" of penetration in a solid wood log.

Shot a doe last year through both shoulders, her entire front end hit the gound, her back legs were spinning but going no where, it was pretty impressive.
