Penalties during matches - How to avoid

Good question. Each discipline has little differences.

Learn the terminology used in each type of shooting. For instance, in USPSA when you hear the course of fire is, "comstock...." That means that even if the course will score best two hits on each paper target, you mat fire extra shots with no penalties except the added time it takes for the extra shots.

"Virginia Count" is just the opposite. That means that you many only fire a prescribed number of shots during the course, or you will be penalized for each extra shot fired, and each extra shot that hits the target.

The long range course we shot Sunday was, "virginia count." The others were all "comsock."

Hello all I am brand new to this forum. This is a good question cause on a couple of the stations at the IPSC match this weekend I had the most points and the best time but i got more penalty points than good points and I can't figure out what I did to incure so many penaltys.Can someone post an example of what would rack up alot of penalty points . On one station I had 130 penalty points . Thanks.

I'd have to ask John to see the scoresheet, but the easy way to rack that many 10 point penalty points is stepping outside the orange faultlines and shooting that many shots.

Another one would be not firing the strong/support hand strings, and just using both.

Hey ! How did you know that was me ? Seriously though when you shoot it over do you still get the penalties from the first shoot ? I'm not complaining just don't want to make the same mistake twice. I know I shot both barrels on station 1 would that be 10 points each ?

Yeah the biggest thing is like cliff said know the terms and rules. Be really carefull around white targets. Different disciplines have different rules.

Muzzle control is also a big deal, and if you dont find it easy to control your muzzle then I dont want to shoot a match with you.

YOu shot with two great shooters...Rodney and Cliff. Most guys like them dont mind teaching just dont bother them at a major match or when they are up next. Talk with them when they are walking through a stage to see how they are going to "game" it. Also Count your shots if it virginia count. Say theres 2 steel and 4 paper then a barrier (starting with one in the pipe). Then reload at the barrier...so you dont run dry. Also dont reload before because you are wasting time.
